Lake Titicaca

Information

It is a lake covering some 8400 km² and is located in the Andean altiplano at an altitude of 3800 metres above sea level. Part of the lake belongs to Bolivia and part to Peru, and there are towns and islands in both countries that can be visited. If you look at the map you will notice that the lake is divided in two, with a large and a small portion separated by a channel about 800 metres wide, which is the Tiquina Strait.

Its waters are crystal clear. The climate between April and November is sunny, and rainfall is mainly between December and March. It has several tributaries that provide water, especially in the rainy season, which is mostly lost through evaporation and to a lesser extent through the Desaguadero River.

In the Bolivian sector, the city of Copacabana stands out, from where boats leave for the Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun). On this island there are trails, archaeological sites and services to eat and spend the night there. You can also visit the Isla de la Luna (Island of the Moon).

On the Peruvian side is Puno with its port from where excursions depart to visit the floating islands of the Uros, which are artificial islands made of reeds (cattails) and are inhabited.
