Birdwatching on Isla del Sol

On Isla del Sol you can observe a good number of birds, both terrestrial and aquatic, typical of the Bolivian altiplano. The island has trails, some of them long, such as the one that joins the southern and northern ends, which allow you to walk and access different sectors.

Beginning with the aquatic species, the Puna teal (Spatula puna) is very confident in the northern harbour. A species of great interest is the Titicaca grebe (Rollandia microptera), which is in danger of extinction.

Turning to terrestrial birds of prey, one bird of prey that is often seen is the mountain caracara (Phalcoboenus megalopterus). In the populated areas, the bare-faced ground dove (Metriopelia ceciliae) abounds. In the different areas of ruins, the southern Andean flicker (Colaptes rupicola), the cream-winged cinclodes (Cinclodes albiventris), the ash-breasted sierra-finch (Geospizopsis plebejus) and the Peruvian sierra-finch (Phrygilus punensis) are frequently seen.
