The main point to take into account when deciding what time of the year to go to Machu Picchu is the weather. The historic sanctuary is located in a humid area, where at times there can be strong storms.

For this reason, the most recommended months are the driest and with less tendency to rain (I say tendency because there may be precipitation at any time), which are between May and September, or even better from June to August. However, you have to take into account that this period is high season, with a large number of tourists, so it is necessary to make reservations in advance for train tickets, tickets to Machu Picchu and the Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu mountains. And if you want to visit at least part of the sanctuary in peace and quiet at this time of year, it is advisable to enter early in the morning (just when it opens) before the crowds start to arrive.

On the other hand, from November to March the weather is rainy. During this period, there may be intense storms and some roads may be difficult to drive on. It may also happen that some accesses or places may be closed for security reasons, especially in January and February.

My recommendation is to take all this into account not only for Machu Picchu, but also if you are going to do any of the other long trekking options offered in the rest of the department of Cusco.
