Information about Chile

An overview of what is there and what activities can be done in the country.

A characteristic that marks part of the relief of Chile in general is the presence of the Andes Mountains. In some sectors it is very high, as in the regions of Antofagasta and Atacama where there are several of the 'seismiles' (mountains above 6000 metres above sea level) of the American continent. The mountain range is to the east, and in the west we have a long sea coast along the entire territory.

If we look from north to south, the climate and landscapes change. To the north is the Atacama Desert, which is one of the driest areas in the world. And in the south we see extensive Patagonian forests, some of which are very humid. In addition, the country's temperatures tend to be lower as you move from the north to the south.

This is how in Chile we have numerous tourist attractions throughout the length and breadth of its territory. Among the most popular destinations are San Pedro de Atacama with the Los Flamencos National Reserve, Torres del Paine National Park, Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park with its Petrohué waterfalls, Conguillío National Park, Villarrica National Park, Viña del Mar and the capital Santiago. In insular Chile is the island of Rapa Nui or Easter Island, famous for its archaeological resources such as the monolithic statues known as moais.

The country has a nationwide system of protected areas, and there are many national parks and reserves accessible for visits. For wildlife watching, the two main groups of species to record are the Andean or mountain species and in the centre-south the Patagonian species.

There is an international airport in Santiago where flights arrive from many parts of the world, and several airports in major cities in different regions of the country, such as Antofagasta, Arica, Calama, Concepción, Iquique, etc.
