Information
It is a locality of the region of Antofagasta that is situated at more than 2400 metres above sea level, on the banks of the San Pedro River. It maintains the characteristic of having its constructions made of adobe (a material made of mud and straw and shaped like bricks).
It has a variety of services such as shops, restaurants, hotels, ATM and petrol station. It has a historic centre with a square and a church in front of it. In the main street Caracoles they sell handicrafts, excursions and there are places to eat. You can visit the Padre Le Paige Museum which exhibits Atacameño archaeological material, and the Museo del Meteorito, another museum which displays meteorites found in the Atacama Desert.
It is the most chosen destination to stay and to visit the countless tourist attractions nearby such as salt flats, geological formations, geysers and many more.
It can be reached by different means of transport:
- By bus: public transport comes from Antofagasta, Calama, Santiago and from the Argentinean cities of Salta and San Salvador de Jujuy.
- By car: from Calama it is 100 km along Route 23. To get there from Argentina you have the asphalted Road 27 (of Chile) through the Jama border crossing, or the gravel Route 23 (of Chile) through the Sico crossing.
- By plane: it is possible to approach through the El Loa airport in Calama, where direct flights arrive from Santiago and there may be (confirm) some days of the week from La Serena. There are also connecting flights from many other places. Then you have to take a vehicle from the airport to San Pedro de Atacama.
