Information
This archaeological site was an ancient Atacameño village, located about 9 km from San Pedro de Atacama. It belongs to the Los Flamencos National Reserve.
To get there, from San Pedro de Atacama take the Licancabur Street or Route 23 in the direction of Calama. After 1 km there is an asphalted road on the left. After 4 km you reach a fork in the road, where you turn left again. Follow this road for about 2 km to the village of Coyo, and after another 1.5 km you will reach the ruins.
To enter the area you have to pay an entrance fee, and it takes about 1 hour to walk around it.
The site was a settlement that existed from before the Christian era until approximately 500 AD. It developed agricultural activities thanks to the water coming from the San Pedro River, and at the same time it was a point of trade and traffic of merchandise between the coast and the inhabitants of the Andean zone.
There are walkways/footbridges where you can see the remains of what was once the village, made up of circular structures that today are largely covered by desert sand. There is also a replica of what used to be a dwelling of the time.
