Information
Tambillo is a natural attraction located in the Antofagasta region, in northern Chile, about 26 kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama and approximately 11 kilometers from Toconao. It is a forest of tamarugos, a tree endemic to northern Chile that has the remarkable ability to adapt to extremely arid environments. This unique forest is situated in the heart of the desert and is part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve.
The forest was planted as part of a reforestation project initiated in the early 1970s. Today, it can be visited and freely explored, making it an ideal place to enjoy a moment of tranquility and, above all, shade—a scarce resource in this type of environment. It is important to note that some branches may have thorns, so caution is advised, especially when visiting with children, and the use of flip-flops or thin footwear should be avoided.
It is also essential to consider that there are no services available at the site, so it is recommended to bring everything necessary based on the amount of time you plan to stay: water, food, sun protection, and any other items you may find useful.
To get there from San Pedro de Atacama, take Route 23 toward Toconao and the Sico Pass. After traveling about 26 kilometers, the tamarugos can be seen emerging amid the arid landscape, as the road crosses one end of the forest. At that point, a dirt track opens up that allows direct access to the area.
