Information

Balamkú is a Maya archaeological site located in the Mexican state of Campeche, set in the middle of a vast natural area with rich biodiversity.

It lies 3 km from the village of Conhuás, which is situated along Route 186 and where you can find a few very basic services such as simple lodging and a small grocery store. From there a secondary road heads northwest, and after 3 km leads directly to the entrance of the ruins. It's important to keep in mind that there are no shops or services in the immediate surroundings of the archaeological site.

It's a small area and can be fully explored in about an hour. In general you'll find very few visitors or even none at all, which makes it possible to enjoy the place in complete tranquility. It's ideal for those who have already visited the large archaeological zone of Calakmul and still have a bit of time to discover something else.

Balamkú's main attraction is found in one of the structures of the Central Group. From the outside, this structure looks like any other in the complex, but inside it houses a spectacular stucco frieze dating from 550 AD to 600 AD. It's in very good condition and its red pigments are still clearly visible.
