Information

San Pablo Villa de Mitla is a town located in the center of the state of Oaxaca in Mexico, approximately 41 kilometers from the city of Oaxaca de Juárez.

It is well prepared to welcome tourists, offering restaurants where visitors can try traditional dishes, various lodging options and a range of shops. There are many stores that sell handmade textile items such as hammocks, bags and tablecloths, and around the ruins there are stalls offering local crafts.

A distinctive feature of this town is that it has mezcal factories, as mezcal is a traditional alcoholic beverage of Mexico. Mitla is one of the main producing towns and is part of the well-known Ruta del Mezcal (Mezcal Route). Some factories are located near the center, while many others are found along Route 190 which connects Mitla with Tlacolula de Matamoros. It's the ideal place for those looking to buy artisanal mezcal, as you can explore the area to find good quality at affordable prices.

Without a doubt one of the main attractions is the Mitla archaeological site, which is located within the town itself. It features well-preserved structures, among which the Salón de las Columnas (Hall of Columns) stands out, a courtyard with several large stone columns. At one end of the site visitors can see the Church of San Pablo Apóstol, which was built by the Spaniards in that very spot using materials taken from the original structures.

To get to San Pablo Villa de Mitla, there are buses that depart from the city of Oaxaca de Juárez and drop visitors off at the entrance to the town.
