Xochicalco

Information

Xochicalco is an archaeological site located in the Mexican state of Morelos, about 33 km from Cuernavaca and approximately 120 km from Mexico City. To get there by car, you take Route 166 which connects the towns of Alpuyeca and Miatlacán, and from there a paved detour goes through the town of Xochicalco and after driving about 4 km you arrive directly at the archaeological site.

The site sits atop a hill and has a good number of structures to explore. Generally it doesn't get too many visitors, which makes it easy to walk around calmly. Keep in mind that the visit takes some time and there isn't much shade, except for a few small scattered trees. That's why it's best to avoid the hottest hours and bring essentials like a hat, sunscreen, water and anything else you might find useful. It's also important to know that the site is somewhat remote with no shops or services on-site or nearby, so it's a good idea to come well prepared.

Xochicalco developed on these hills between 600 AD and 900 AD, with settlers who migrated from Teotihuacán and other regions. It was a center with residential and religious complexes that held great importance in its time.

The most outstanding structure you'll see is the Pyramid of the Feathered Serpents, decorated with eight serpents that give it an imposing character. Other notable constructions include the Observatory and the South Ball Court, and in certain areas you can also find caves. The site also has a museum located about 700 meters from the ruins, where original pieces are on display and the visit can be done quickly.

One curious thing is that it's common to spot a bird called the lesser roadrunner (Geococcyx velox) among the ruins, a colorful species typical of the region that often appears among the stones.
