Ribera Norte Municipal Nature Park

Information

It is a protected area in San Isidro, a district in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It sits along the shores of the Río de la Plata, about 9 km from the northern edge of the city of Buenos Aires (national capital). It is an urban nature reserve that preserves a variety of riverside environments, such as coastal shores, grasslands, reed beds, and riparian thickets.

Admission is free, and visitors enter through a single main gate, where park rangers are present. The only service available on-site is toilets, so food and beverages must be purchased in the surrounding urban area. Just in front of the main entrance, there is a native plant nursery that can also be visited as part of the experience.

To walk around the reserve, there is a circular path of low difficulty. Along the way there are footbridges, a metal bridge and a section that runs close to the river. One of the highlights is a birdwatching lookout overlooking a lagoon (a small inland body of water), where ducks, herons and other aquatic species are commonly seen. The site is often visited by wildlife enthusiasts: besides various bird species, it is not unusual to spot native rodents such as coypus and reptiles like turtles. Thanks to the modest size of the place, visitors can see quite a lot without having to walk long distances.

It can be visited all year round, although birdwatchers should keep in mind the season in which the different species are present.

Getting there from the city of Buenos Aires:
- Via the Tren de la Costa: La Barranca station is only 400 metres from the reserve. This is an excellent option if you want to include Ribera Norte as part of a broader itinerary, visiting other attractions accessible from other train stops. The service departs from the Av. Maipú station in Olivos, which can be reached by buses or via the Retiro-Bartolomé Mitre branch of the Mitre railway.
- Via the Mitre railway: the Retiro-to-Tigre branch stops at San Isidro station, from which it is about a 10-minute taxi ride to the reserve.

A great way to explore multiple nature reserves in a single day is to visit Ribera Norte in the morning, grab lunch nearby, and then head to Vicente López Nature Reserve, located just 4 km away.
