Information
It is a tourist town in the Argentine province of Chubut, located on the coast of the Argentine Sea. It is only 6 km from the center of the provincial capital Rawson, and about 22 km from Trelew. It is very busy in summer (from January to March) and during holidays, both with tourists who come to spend their summer on the Patagonian coast, and mainly with people from the nearby cities and the lower Chubut River Valley.
Its sandy beach is extensive, as it is wide and very long. There is a road running parallel to the coast that is ideal for walking along and enjoying the view of the sea. It has services for visitors, such as a variety of shops, places to eat and a good range of accommodations.
One of the main attractions is spotting Commerson's dolphin (Cephalorhynchus commersonii), a cetacean that is easily recognized because it has a black head, fins and tail, while the rest of its body is white. Boat excursions to see them depart from Puerto Rawson, located where the Chubut River flows into the sea, only 2.5 km from Playa Unión. There are agencies there that offer this type of boat excursion.
To get there by public transportation, there is an intercity bus that goes to Playa Unión and Puerto Rawson from Trelew and Rawson. To get there by car from Rawson, take Antártida Argentina Avenue in the southern part of the city, which leads directly to the center of the seaside area.
