It is a locality in the province of Catamarca in the northwest of Argentina. It is located on National Route 60 near the Andes Mountains, 49 kilometres from Tinogasta and 323 kilometres from San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca. On its side is the Abaucán River and beyond are sierras (a mountain chain).
It has services such as a tourist information office, grocery shops, petrol station, ATM, restaurants and a variety of lodgings. It is common to find many tourists because it is an ideal place to make a base, stay several days and visit the attractions that are in the same locality and also outside of it:
- By the entrance of the village is the Comandancia de Armas and next to it the church of San Pedro. Both are from the 18th century and are attractions of the so-called Ruta del Adobe (Adobe Route).
- Near the centre of the town is the Museo del Hombre (Museum of Man), where you can see pieces of original cultures and two mummies dating from the 15th to 16th century.
- If you go north towards Saujil, Medanitos and Tatón you can see huge dunes. In particular, the one called Duna Mágica (Magic Dune) by Saujil is easy to access.
- About 16 kilometres away are the famous Fiambalá hot springs, a complex located in the middle of the mountains. It has 14 staggered pools where the temperature goes from higher to lower as you go down.
- If you take the National Route 60 towards the San Francisco pass, you will enter the Ruta de los Seismiles (Seismiles Route), which is a route through one of the highest areas of the continent where you can see peaks over 6000 metres above sea level.
To get to Fiambalá:
- By bus: there is public transportation from San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca and Tinogasta.
- By car: the access to Fiambalá is on National Route 60. This road is 49 km from Tinogasta and 161 km from Aimogasta. To come from San Fernando it is 72 kilometres on National Route 38 and 251 kilometres on Route 60.
