Information
The Tara Salt Flat is situated at more than 4000 metres above sea level. It belongs to the Los Flamencos National Reserve.
To get there from San Pedro de Atacama you take Route 27 and drive 103 km in the direction of the Jama pass. There you take a dirt road that goes off to the left, which is only recommended for 4x4 vehicles equipped with GPS (with previously loaded maps).
On this dirt road you can see the so-called Monjes de La Pacana (Monks of La Pacana) at the beginning of the route. They are large volcanic rocks scattered and isolated in a large desert area. A few kilometres further on (it is advisable to go with a guide to make sure you don't get lost) you can see the Catedrales de Tara (Tara Cathedrals), which are very striking formations. Finally, you will reach the extensive salt flat, commonly inhabited by birds typical of this high altitude environment.
