Wildlife Watching in Llanos de Challe National Park

The Llanos de Challe National Park offers the possibility of observing a great number of wildlife species, since it has trails and accesses to its beaches to cross its coastal desert.

Starting with mammals, the area protects the guanaco (Lama guanicoe), whose herds often cross the park's routes. It is also common to come across the occasional chilla (Lycalopex griseus, a fox).

Among the reptiles, the spotted false monitor (Callopistes maculatus), the Atacamen Pacific iguana (Microlophus atacamensis) and the many-spotted tree iguana (Liolaemus nigromaculatus) can be seen on the trails near the Los Pozos office. In particular, a good number of these individuals can be seen on the trails in the vicinity of Playa Blanca (Blanca Beach).

Common coastal birds are the snowy plover (Charadrius nivosus), grey gull (Larus modestus), red-legged cormorant (Poikilocarbo gaimardi) and whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus). On the other hand, terrestrial species can be seen on the trails, among which the diuca finch (Diuca diuca) and the rufous-banded miner (Geositta rufipennis) are common.
