Hydrophilic Forest

Information

This forest is one of the main attractions of the Bosque Fray Jorge National Park, located in the Coquimbo region of Chile. It can be explored via a low-difficulty trail, ideal for all types of visitors. The route has virtually no challenging sections or steep slopes, and the estimated walking time is about 40 minutes. The path combines stretches of dirt road with wooden walkways and features several viewpoints that allow visitors to appreciate the surroundings from different angles.

Along the way, one can observe the surprising forest that grows in this desert climate zone. The presence of coastal fog, locally known as "camanchaca", is what enables this vegetation to thrive despite the arid conditions that dominate the area. This atmospheric phenomenon provides the moisture necessary to sustain an ecosystem that, given its latitude and climate, should not exist there. The contrast between the humid forest and the dry landscape that surrounds it is one of the most striking aspects of the place.

Access to the trail is from the park's environmental information center, following a dirt road of approximately 6.5 kilometers. This stretch is precarious and may present difficulties, so it is recommended to use high-clearance vehicles, preferably 4x4, especially during periods of rain or dense fog.
