Uyuni

Information

It is a locality situated in the department of Potosí in Bolivia, about 200 km from the city of Villa Imperial de Potosí. It is close to the Uyuni salt flat and most of the visitors who come to visit it stay there, which is why it is common to find a large number of national and foreign tourists.

It has a variety of services such as shops, handicraft shops, petrol station, restaurants and hotels. There are agencies that offer different excursions to tour the region, many of which are located in the central area around Arce Avenue and Ferroviaria Avenue.

On the outskirts of the city there is a train cemetery. They are abandoned wagons and locomotives that come from a railway line that had been inaugurated at the end of the 19th century to transport minerals to Chile and later stopped working.

There are different means of transport to get to Uyuni:
- By bus: there are buses from La Paz, Oruro, Potosí, Sucre, Tupiza and Villazón. And also from Calama (Chile).
- By car: the asphalted Route 5 connects with Potosí (203 km) and Sucre (355 km). On the other hand, if you take Route 30 to the north and combine it with Route 1, you will reach Oruro (315 km in total).
- By plane: the La Joya Andina international airport is 2.5 km from the city centre. Direct flights arrive some days (confirm, as it depends on the season) from Cochabamba, La Paz and Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Connections can be made from other Bolivian cities such as Rurrenabaque, Sucre and Trinidad, and even from other countries.
- By train: you should find out and confirm if the section linking Oruro-Uyuni-Villazón is working or not, as at some times there were companies that provided this service and at times they stopped providing it.
