Information
It's a small village in the department of Oruro, Bolivia. It sits at about 4,238 meters above sea level, and alongside it winds the river that shares its name: Sajama. The village lies within Sajama National Park, in the heart of a high-altitude natural area where it's common to see many species of wildlife—even around the village itself.
It's a perfect place to stay when planning to explore the protected area for more than a day. It offers some basic services such as food and drink shops, simple restaurants and several lodging options. One recommendation is to take the opportunity to try traditional Andean dishes typically prepared by locals, like quinoa soup. The village has a charming plaza with the Natividad church.
Sajama is nestled in a setting of striking landscapes. On one side it sits at the foot of Nevado Sajama, which at 6,542 meters is the highest peak in Bolivia. On the other it's surrounded by other peaks that can be seen and recognized as the Parinacota and Pomerape volcanoes to the southwest. From the village several paths and trails lead to the park's various attractions, including natural hot springs, active geysers, high-altitude lakes and queñua forests (Polylepis). If you'd prefer to do the hikes with a guide, there are people in the village who offer this service.
Sajama is reached by an 11-kilometer dirt road that branches off from National Route 4, which connects Patacamaya with Tambo Quemado, heading toward the Chilean border.
