Information
It is the first protected area created in Bolivia, with the aim of preserving its semi-arid Andean ecosystem and its biodiversity. It occupies some 94939 hectares and belongs to the department of Oruro.
Within its boundaries is the Nevado Sajama, which is the highest point in the country at 6542 metres above sea level and can be seen perfectly from several places in the park. Other peaks that can be seen well are the volcanoes Parinacota and Pomerape, which from some angles can be seen together. There are areas with 'queñua' forest (a plant species native to these high Andean areas), which is a small tree with reddish bark. There are also high altitude rivers, geysers and fumaroles. And for those who are interested in wildlife watching, it is an excellent place to see high altitude species.
It has trails and paths for hiking and discovering many of its attractions. Always remember that the entire park is located above 4200 metres above sea level, so it is possible to feel the effects of the altitude, especially if you do activities such as trekking or those that require physical effort.
Within the park is the village of Sajama, with lodging, eating places and some basic shops. There is also a place called Tomarapi that has accommodation. Undoubtedly, these are good options to spend the night and thus be able to dedicate more than one day to visit the different places in the park.
