Coroico

Information

It is a Bolivian locality in the department of La Paz, situated about 100 km from the city that bears its name (La Paz). It is at the top of a hill at an altitude of 1740 metres above sea level. It is inside the Yungas ecoregion, which is characterised by its great biodiversity.

It has a tourist information office, market, restaurants and accommodation. It has a main square where most of the services and the central area of the town are placed.

There is a walk called Ruta de las Cascadas (Waterfalls Route) where you can visit waterfalls, which are located on the road that leads to Cruz Loma and Santa Bárbara. You can go there on foot, by bicycle, with a short taxi ride or in vans that leave from the Coroico square. The first waterfall is free to access, the second has an artificial pool and you have to pay a fee to access it, and the third one also has to pay a fee and there is an uphill trail to walk along.

To get to Coroico from La Paz by public transport, buses leave every hour from the Villa Fatima bus terminal (a neighbourhood in the north of the city). When you do this route, you drive along corniche roads where you can appreciate the transition between the dry altiplano and the Yungas with humidity and vegetation, since during the journey you descend in altitude for almost 1900 metres.
