Information

It is a small village located in the Catamarca Puna, in the northwest of Argentina. It is in the middle of a totally natural area and it is where many tourists who come to visit the different attractions of the region usually stop. It has some grocery shops, lodgings and eating places.

It has a church with a square in front of it. At one side of the town is the Cerro La Cruz (a hill), which has a path that can be climbed on foot, allowing one to reach its summit from where there is a panoramic view of the town and its surroundings.

In particular, the location of the town is ideal for visiting outstanding sites such as the Campo de Piedra Pómez, the Laguna Blanca Biosphere Reserve and the Galán volcano. There are those who offer guide services and complete excursions to these attractions, many of which are advisable to be guided as several are difficult and risky to do on one's own.

El Peñón is reached by Route 43, which is 59 km from Antofagasta de la Sierra and 122 km from Villa Vil. Combining roads 40 and 43 it is 199 km from Belén.
