Information

Los Sauces Dam is a reservoir located in the Argentine province of La Rioja, relatively close to the provincial capital of the same name. It is built over a gorge of the Los Sauces River, also known as the Río Grande. It's a very popular spot on weekends, especially among city residents looking for an outdoor space to relax or spend time with family.

From the city of La Rioja, you get there by taking the paved National Route 75 for about 14 kilometers. A little before reaching a tunnel, there's a fork in the road that leads to a cornice road also paved. This road winds around the lake and takes you directly to the dam, eventually reconnecting with Route 75.

It's important to keep in mind that there aren't many shops in the area or nearby, so it's recommended to bring everything you might need.

Along the access route, the road runs very close to one side of the water for quite a stretch, offering a privileged view of the place even before you arrive. The landscape offered by the reservoir is truly impressive. The waters dotted with small islets, blend with the surrounding mountains tinted in reddish and greenish hues that shift depending on the time of day. You can also walk across the dam wall from end to end, which gives you different angles to take in the scenery.

It's undoubtedly an excellent option for those visiting the capital of La Rioja who want to experience something different and enjoy a picnic outdoors.
