Information
This is a glacier in a private area, very close to Lago del Desierto. You can visit it, and you have to pay a ticket to enter.
To get there from El Chaltén:
- By car: there are 36 or 37 km of gravel road along Provincial Route 41, where the access to the Huemul glacier is about 100 metres before the end of the road (from the so-called southern end of Lago del Desierto).
- By public transport: at the bus terminal and in the main streets of El Chaltén there are offices that sell bus tickets that leave at the access gate to the glacier trail. Note that this ticket does not always include the entrance ticket to Huemul (it depends on the agency and the package they offer).
From the access, you have to walk a 60 minutes one way (approximately 2 hours round trip), which has an uphill section (recommended for people in good physical condition). At the beginning of the trail you will be walking along a river. Finally you reach a turquoise 'laguna' (like a lake, the appearance may vary depending on the time of year) with the glacier in front of it, a truly spectacular landscape.
