It is a tourist locality in the northwest of the province of Chubut. It is about 3 kilometres away from the national park that bears its name (Lago Puelo) and 12 kilometres from the town of El Bolsón (in the province of Río Negro).
It has services to receive visitors, such as a tourist information office, supermarkets, several shops, a petrol station and a variety of lodgings.
It is located in an area with many tourist attractions and activities:
- It is next to the Azul River, where there is a place for free access to its shore with crystal clear water.
- Very close to the centre is the access to the Currumahuida area with trails such as the medium-difficulty Sendero de la Virgen and other more demanding ones.
- At 2.5 km is the so-called Azul River Footbridge. There is a bridge with imposing panoramic views, and immediately after crossing it, a path starts leading to the Blanco River and waterfalls.
- Taking Provincial Route 16 south for 3 km, you reach the Lago Puelo National Park. There you will find its lake, beaches, trails and the possibility of nautical excursions.
- If you go north for 12 km you will find El Bolsón, which already belongs to the province of Río Negro. There you can access many other attractions such as the Cabeza del Indio, the Bosque Tallado and the different trails of the ANPRALE (Natural Protected Area Río Azul-Lago Escondido).
To get to Lago Puelo (town) there are direct buses from the cities of Bariloche, Córdoba and Trelew. There is also transportation to other destinations in the region, such as El Bolsón and Esquel. The nearest airports are those of Bariloche (148 km away) and Esquel (144 km away), although in some seasons there may be some passenger flights to El Bolsón airport, which is 15 km away (check it).
