It is a lake in the northwest of the province of Chubut. It has an area of about 17 km² and is surrounded by mountains and forests. Its tributaries are streams such as the Quiaco and its effluent is the Epuyén River, which then flows into Lake Puelo.
It has 2 main sites to visit:
1. Puerto Bonito Municipal Park: it is a protected area with many attractions to see:
- On its access road, inside the park, there is a viewpoint that allows you to see the lake and its surroundings from above.
- It has several car parks with different areas for daytime use, ideal for an afternoon picnic. First you reach a sector that has wooden walkways with a balcony overlooking the lake, from where there are some tracks leading to part of its shore. If you follow the access road to the end, there is a place to leave the car and access a wide beach.
- There are also trails for trekking activities.
2. Puerto Patriada: it is at the northern end of the lake, and it is very crowded during the high season.
- To get there, take National Route 40, 1 km away from El Hoyo, along a dirt and gravel road (go slowly because there may be pits and loose stones). It is 10 km to the entrance gate.
- At the beginning there is a car park and a good beach (bathing is only allowed when there is a lifeguard service). Then the road continues parallel to the body of water, with different descents. There is also a campsite where you can spend the night.
