Lake Futalaufquen

Information

It has 7825 hectares and is within the Los Alerces National Park. Its main tributary is the Arrayanes River (which originates in Lake Verde) and its major effluent is Lake Krüger. It is in the middle of a natural environment of forests and mountains.

It is easily accessible as Provincial Route 71 runs along its entire eastern shore, which is 32 km from Trevelin to the southern end of the lake and 48 km from Cholila to the northern end. From the road there are excellent views of the body of water at times, and there are many descents to beaches, some of them wide and attractive, such as the beaches of Francés, Bahía Rosales and La Usina. There are options of day use areas, camping sites and some services in the village of Villa Futalaufquen and in Puerto Limonao.

In its vicinity there is access to trails of varying difficulty. The Pinturas Rupestres trail is easy and leads to some footbridges where you can see paintings on rocks, with the option of a short 10-minute walk or a slightly longer 30-minute walk. Another easy trail is the one to the Cascada Irigoyen (Irigoyen Waterfall), which has a lower and an upper viewpoint.

A detour leads to Puerto Limonao, where there are beaches, a grocery store and a pier from where nautical excursions depart.
