Cenotes near Chichén Itzá

Information

When visiting Chichén Itzá, a good option is to spend half a day touring the archaeological zone and half a day visiting nearby cenotes:
- Cenote Ik Kil: it is 6 kilometres away from Chichén Itzá, taking Route 180 towards Valladolid and then a detour. It is an open type cenote, like a tall cylinder with water at the bottom. It is very much visited by tourists.
- Cenote Yokdzonot: it is 18 kilometres away. From Chichén Itzá, take Route 180 in the direction of Mérida to the village of Yokdzonot. The cenote is about 300 metres to one side of the village. It is an open, cylindrical cenote with water at the bottom. The water is very deep and it is mandatory to wear a life jacket. You can see some species of fish, in addition to the catfish that can be seen in most of the cenotes.

IMPORTANT: Always remember that if you are going to use sunscreen, you must use a biodegradable one in order not to contaminate the water of the cenote.
