Information

Xpujil is a Maya archaeological site located in the state of Campeche in Mexico, right at the edge of the town that shares its name. The entrance is along Route 186, about 500 meters from the intersection with the town's main street. There, a fork in the road leads to a parking area roughly 100 meters ahead where vehicles can be left. From that point a gallery-like path winds through vegetation with trees and shrubs guiding visitors to the ruins.

The town of Xpujil offers shops, restaurants and several lodging options, some of which are located directly along Route 186. There are also bus services that connect Xpujil with other tourist destinations such as Bacalar, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and others.

The name Xpujil can be found written in different ways, such as Xpuhil. It's important to note that this town belongs to the state of Campeche, so if arriving from Quintana Roo there may be a one-hour time difference (the clock might change).

As for the ruins an entrance ticket is required. The visit is relatively quick since the site isn't very large and it can be explored in about an hour. It was once a settlement that reached its peak between 500 and 800 AD. Its main attraction is the Building of the Three Towers (known as Building I) which rises to a height of 18 meters. This structure is unique and stands out from other Maya constructions in the region for having three towers instead of the two typical of the Río Bec architectural style. The site features informational signs that explain this and other structures found there.
