To decide when to go to Santa Cruz, you must first consider whether you are going to visit the Andean area or the plateau and/or the coast, since the climate and seasons are different in both parts of the province.
1. Andean West: the activities you can do and the availability of services depend on the time of the year:
- Winter: June to September, when temperatures are very low. Certain destinations may be inaccessible due to snow and/or ice, and some activities may even be closed for safety reasons (such as some trails in El Chaltén).
- Summer: the best time to visit lakes, see glaciers and go trekking is from November to April. Keep in mind that from December to March (summer) is high season and the number of tourists is high. For this reason it may be advisable to book accommodation, car rental, etc. in advance.
2. Plateau and east coast:
- While many destinations can be visited all year round, you should be aware that in winter (June to September) temperatures can be very low.
- There are some places, such as Caleta Olivia or Puerto Santa Cruz, where winds can be very strong.
- For those interested in observing marine fauna, take into account that there are species that are not around all year round. Such is the case of penguins, which are mainly present between October and March.
