Fort of San Felipe de Bacalar

The Fort of San Felipe de Bacalar is a historic site located in the town of Bacalar, in the southern part of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It sits right in the central area of town and directly across from the Laguna de Bacalar (a lake), which makes it common to see tourists walking around its surroundings. The view from outside the fortress framed by the park and with the lake in the background is almost a must-have photo for those visiting the area.

This fort was built by the Spanish in the 18th century with the purpose of protecting the local population from frequent pirate attacks that plagued the region, especially from the English and also the French.

Today it is a tourist attraction open to visitors, as it preserves numerous elements from the colonial era. Walking through it, one can appreciate that it is built of stone. Visitors can access its upper level, where old cannons are displayed and a stunning panoramic view of the waterfront and Laguna de Bacalar can be enjoyed. It also includes a museum that features explanatory panels about the site's history, maps, scale models and exhibitions of weapons, cannons and sculptures.
