It is a state in southern Mexico, located on the Yucatán Peninsula. Its capital is Chetumal, but the most populated city is Cancún. Its natural and archaeological attractions make it one of the most visited states in the country, with internationally known sites.
The east coast corresponds to the Caribbean Sea with popular cities such as Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Part of it constitutes what is called the Riviera Maya, with white sandy beaches. There are islands to visit such as the island of Cozumel with its various attractions, the natural Contoy Island and the busy Mujeres Island. To the south, the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve offers the possibility to take a tour in contact with nature.
On the other hand, to the north of the state facing the Gulf of Mexico is Holbox, an island with crystal-clear beaches and separated from the mainland by a lagoon.
Among its archaeological sites, Cobá and Tulum are massively visited. Other archaeological sites with important structures but less visited because they are farther away from the big tourist cities are Dzibanché, Kinichná and Kohunlich.
The limestone soil causes rainwater to filter and originate innumerable underground water currents. This gives rise to the cenotes, which are water reservoirs that have been left open to the surface. There are many cenotes in this state that are open for tourism, and it is a must to visit and refresh yourself in some of them. The cenotes near Tulum and the so-called Ruta de los Cenotes (Cenotes Route, which connects Puerto Morelos to Leona Vicario) are excellent options.
Various activities such as boat trips, snorkelling and bird watching are ideal to do in this region.
