Contoy Island

Information

It is an island of about 3 km² that belongs to the Contoy National Park, where the ecosystem of both the island and the surrounding aquatic environment is protected.

To visit it, it is only possible with a nautical excursion from Cancún, and there are only 2 or 3 authorised agencies that make the trip. Please note that, in order to preserve the island's ecosystem, only 200 visitors are allowed per day. It is therefore advisable to book the tour in advance to ensure a place. Many of these excursions are full day tours with lunch and drinks included, and include a snorkelling stop and a one-hour stop on Mujeres Island. In any case, it is always a good idea to ask whoever is selling the tour what is included.

Contoy Island is a true paradise, with a 100% natural environment, white sandy beach and crystal clear water. It has no inhabitants, as it is not allowed to live there or to build. The only construction is the park ranger station, where there is an interpretation centre and the basics to receive tourists. Visitors must follow some instructions during the trip, such as putting on sunscreen only at certain times and taking back their waste, as it is a priority to take care of the environment.

There are two hikes to do. One is the trail to the Pajarera Central lagoon, which leads to a lagoon full of birds. The other is the Sikimay trail which leads to some dunes.
