Cobá is a small village located in the state of Quintana Roo in Mexico, right in the heart of the Yucatán Peninsula. It lies about 47 km from Tulum, 59 km from Valladolid, 108 km from Playa del Carmen and 138 km from Cancún. In all cases the roads connecting it to these destinations are fully paved. There are also buses that arrive from the terminals in Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, making it easy to get there.
It's a quiet and small town that offers some basic services for visitors, such as shops where you can buy groceries, simple restaurants serving traditional meals and a few hotels.
What makes Cobá special is that it has several attractions that can be visited easily, without having to travel long distances:
— Cobá Archaeological Site: this is the main attraction in the area and can be reached on foot, as it's located right next to the village. It draws many visitors who come from the major tourist centers along the coast. It features impressive structures among which the Nohoch Mul pyramid stands out, the tallest in the Riviera Maya offering a privileged view of the surrounding area from its summit.
— Laguna de Cobá (a small lake): located in the center of town. It has a wooden walkway that borders it and allows for a peaceful stroll. It's ideal for observing native birds from aquatic environments.
— Cenotes: you can take a taxi (it's recommended to arrange the return trip with the driver) and visit nearby ones such as Choo-Ha, Tankach-Ha and others.
A good itinerary to make the most of a full day is to start with the archaeological zone in the morning, have lunch at one of the village's restaurants around midday and in the afternoon do a second activity like taking your time to walk around the Laguna de Cobá or heading to one of the nearby cenotes to cool off.
