Trelew

Information

It is one of the most populated cities in the province, located near the Chubut River. It has a tourist information office, shops, restaurants, hotels, petrol station and ATM. The provincial capital Rawson is only 15 km away.

At the entrance to the city, coming from the north on National Route 3, you will find a giant replica of the dinosaur Patagotitan mayorum, considered by researchers to be the largest land animal of all times, of which remains have been found in the province of Chubut.

Right in the centre is the Egidio Feruglio Palaeontological Museum (MEF), where there are exhibits of fossils and dinosaurs, and rooms with samples from different eras. Just across the street is the Pueblo de Luis regional museum, with rooms on the history of the area arranged in chronological order.

For those interested in bird watching, about 400 metres from the museums is the laguna (like a lake) Cacique Chiquichano, which is surrounded by parks and a pedestrian path. And outside the city limits is the laguna del Ornitólogo.

If you go a few kilometres there are other places of tourist interest to visit:
— The traditional Welsh village of Gaiman (17 km away): it has museums, a path with viewpoints and an old railway tunnel to walk through.
— Playa Unión (26 km away): it is on the sea coast. It is very crowded during the warm season of the year. Nearby is Puerto Rawson, where boat excursions are offered to watch dolphins, sea lions and other species.
— The penguin reserve Punta Tombo (123 km away): it is an unmissable destination to see magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) in their natural environment, as well as other fauna species of the region.

Getting to Trelew:
- By car: Trelew is on the paved National Route 3, which is 65 km from Puerto Madryn and 375 km from Comodoro Rivadavia.
- By bus: direct buses arrive from Buenos Aires, Comodoro Rivadavia, Puerto Madryn, San Carlos de Bariloche and Viedma. During the day buses come and go from Gaiman, with some from Dolavon. There are also buses to Playa Unión and Rawson.
- By plane: direct flights from Buenos Aires arrive at the airport every day. There may be (confirm) flights from Comodoro Rivadavia and Córdoba some days of the week, and with stopovers from many other places.
