Laguna Nimez Reserve

Information

It is a protected area located in the city of El Calafate, in the Argentine province of Santa Cruz, near the shore of Lake Argentino. It is an ideal place for those interested in natural environments and the observation of wild birds. It is a wetland with lagunas (like lakes), steppe and reed beds, where many species can be observed both aquatic and terrestrial.

The reserve is monitored, fenced around its entire perimeter and to enter an access ticket must be paid. It has well-marked trails that allow visitors to walk through it, and they are easy to follow due to being flat. There are birdwatching viewpoints along the edges of the water bodies, and in different spots there are signs providing information about the biodiversity of the area. In one part there are stairways that lead out to the shore of Lake Argentino.

Although the reserve can be walked through quickly in a couple of hours, it may take a bit longer if one wants to calmly appreciate the abundant wildlife in the area. Some birds are seen almost all the time, such as upland geese, a variety of ducks, the striking Chilean flamingos and groups of birds of prey like chimangos and cinereous harriers. It is also worth taking time to observe the flora, among which the Magellan barberry (Berberis microphylla, in Spanish 'calafate') stands out, a native plant that gives its name to the city.

Visiting the reserve is very accessible because it is located very close to downtown El Calafate. You can get there directly on foot or alternatively with a short taxi ride of about five minutes. Without a doubt it is an excellent option for those who are based in the city to explore the attractions of the region, and take advantage of a day to visit the natural spaces found in the surroundings of the lake which lies just beside it.
