Potrero de los Funes

Information

It is a town in the province of San Luis, located just 15 km from the provincial capital. It is surrounded by mountains belonging to the so-called Sierras de San Luis.

It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the province. During the warm summer months (January and February) many visitors come to enjoy the countless attractions the town has to offer and the scenery of the surrounding hills. It has a tourist information office, grocery stores, restaurants and a wide variety of accommodation options.

It has a dam, and around its reservoir lies the international motor racing circuit that bears the same name: Potrero de los Funes. It is a semi-permanent racetrack, meaning that when there are no races or other events, it functions as an ordinary road open to traffic. Along some sections of the circuit, there are viewpoints overlooking the lake. There are also areas where kayaks and pedal boats can be rented to enjoy the water.

There are several tourist attractions in the town and its surroundings:
— Parque Nativo: this is a green area of about 7 hectares located on the shores of the reservoir. It has tables, barbecue grills and picnic areas, making it a good place to spend some time outdoors.
— Salto de la Moneda: it can be reached via a trail that visitors can follow on their own (it is worth checking whether this option is still available). The hike is of moderate difficulty and requires a good level of physical fitness. The path includes sections with rocky terrain and leads to a waterfall about 10 meters high that flows into a natural pool.
— Public beach and waterfront promenade: there is a public beach on the shores of the reservoir where visitors can enjoy the surroundings. Further along Los Molles Stream, which flows from the northeastern end of the lake, there is a grassy area by the water with benches and tables ideal for relaxing outdoors.

To get from the city of San Luis to Potrero de los Funes, you can travel by car along paved roads or take one of the buses departing from the provincial capital's bus terminal. On the way into town the route passes through Quebrada de los Cóndores, where Provincial Route 18 runs between enormous granite walls. This creates a natural gateway to the valley where the reservoir and the town are located.
