Information about San Luis

An overview of what to see and do.

It is a province located in the centre of Argentina.

The southern part of its territory is flat, and has a large number of lagunas (like lakes), some of which have infrastructure for spending the day. Villa Mercedes is in that area and is the second most populated city in the province.

In contrast, the north has mountain chains that correspond to the Sierras Pampeanas (Pampean Sierras), and has many tourist sites in its different mountain systems:
- Sierras de los Comechingones: they cover the northeastern part of the province (they are shared with the province of Córdoba). At their feet there are several touristic localities, such as the well known Villa de Merlo. Outstanding sites are the Tabaquillo waterfall, the San Ignacio Stream, the Balneario El Talar (a recreational area with a stream) and many more. There are places where you can go zip-lining.
- Sierras de San Luis: these are the ones in the centre-north. You can find attractions such as El Trapiche, La Carolina, El Volcán, Potrero de los Funes and San Francisco del Monte de Oro. There are bathing sites, camping and hiking sites.
- Sierra de las Quijadas: they are towards the west. Its national park stands out, with its reddish soil and geoforms that can be observed through its trails and viewpoints.

Other places to visit are the Bajo de Véliz Provincial Park (a paleontological site), San José del Morro (with a historical site and a recreational area with a streal), the Salinas del Bebedero (like a salt flat) and Villa de la Quebrada (with its Way of the Cross). The province also has many dams, several with bathing places such as La Florida, Las Palmeras and Piscu Yaco reservoirs.

Regarding transportation, there are airports in the cities of San Luis, Villa Mercedes and Villa de Merlo, with flights from Buenos Aires (confirm). There are buses and a good system of asphalted roads and highways that connect the main localities.

This route includes mountains, trails/trekking, rivers, falls/waterfalls.
