Information
The Quebrada de las Higueritas Reserve is a protected area located on the outskirts of the town of Luján, in the Argentine province of San Luis. It's an ideal place for outdoor activities and direct contact with nature, especially hikes that allow visitors to appreciate its diverse environments and landscapes. In general, the number of visitors is not very high even during peak tourist seasons, which helps maintain a peaceful and quiet atmosphere.
Access is from the town by traveling 3.5 km along the paved road that leads to the dam. It's important to keep in mind that there are no shops in the area or its immediate surroundings, so it's best to bring everything you might need such as water, sunscreen and any other items required during the visit. All of this can be purchased in town beforehand.
At the entrance to the reserve there is a ranger station. From there, a walking path begins and after about 500 meters it splits into different trails:
— Los Abuelos trail: low difficulty and approximately 1.5 km long. It's a peaceful walk through the forest, ending at the Higueritas River.
— Salto del Chispiadero trail: a longer route that follows a gorge along the Higueritas River. It starts at 500 meters above sea level and climbs to 1450 metres above sea level, so it's recommended for people in good physical condition.
The reserve is also an excellent spot for observing wildlife. Many bird species native to the region can be seen, especially in the early morning hours when activity is at its peak. It's also possible to encounter some mammals and reptiles, so it's always advised to stay on the marked trails, both for safety and to help preserve the area.
