Wildlife Watching in Quebrada de las Higueritas

The Quebrada de las Higueritas protected area is ideal for wildlife watching, both because of the variety of species it is home to and the trails that provide access to different habitats. Visitors can explore the forest and the ravine, reaching different elevations ranging from 500 meters above sea level to 1450 meters above sea level.

Many species have been recorded in the area and there are plenty of opportunities to spot them during a visit. Among reptiles, snakes are frequently sighted, so visitors are advised to stay on marked trails. Mammals can also be encountered along the way. In particular, the elusive collared peccary (Pecari tajacu) is often spotted in regions with this type of habitat. The gray brocket (Mazama gouazoubira), a medium-sized deer, has also been recorded in the area.

Early morning is a good time to visit the reserve for birdwatching, as a variety of species can be observed during the first hours of the day. Common and noteworthy species include the brown-capped whitestart (Myioborus brunniceps), the olive-crowned crescentchest (Melanopareia maximiliani), the rufous-sided warbling-finch (Poospizopsis hypocondria), the band-tailed seedeater (Catamenia analis), the black-backed grosbeak (Pheucticus aureoventris) and the black-and-chestnut warbling-finch (Poospiza whitii). The Andean swift (Aeronautes andecolus) is also often seen in flight.
