San Luis

Information

It is the most populous city and the capital of the province of San Luis. It is located in a transition zone between the Sierras de San Luis (a mountain range) and the plains.

The city offers a variety of services for tourists including a tourist information office, accommodations, shops, petrol stations, ATMs and restaurants.

There are several places to visit in the city and its surroundings:
a) San Luis Historical Museum (MUHSAL): it has ten rooms that allow visitors to learn about the history of San Luis through audiovisual resources. The tour follows a chronological order, starting with the period when the provincial territory was inhabited exclusively by Indigenous peoples and continuing through the late 20th century.
b) Terrazas del Portezuelo and Chico Dam: both attractions are located opposite each other within the same grounds:
— Chico Dam has a small reservoir, one of whose tributaries is the Chorrillo River. It is surrounded by green spaces with a few concrete benches from where visitors can see a tower housing one of the dam's gates. This structure regulates the flow of water leaving the reservoir.
— Terrazas del Portezuelo is a complex of public buildings that includes the Casa de Gobierno San Luis (San Luis Government House), built on a hill and designed with environmental principles in mind. The surrounding area features a circuit of sculptures made of metal and other materials, with a variety of themes including native flora and fauna. In one section, there is a park with a concrete path that allows visitors to reach the top of the hill and access the main building.
c) Plaza del Cerro: it is a green space with a staircase leading up a small rise. From the top, visitors can enjoy good views of part of the city.

On the other hand, there are many attractions south of the Sierras de San Luis that are relatively close to the provincial capital. Many city residents even have weekend homes in nearby towns or among the mountains, such as Juana Koslay, Potrero de los Funes and El Volcán.
