Beaches near Montezuma

Information

Montezuma is located on the coast of the Gulf of Nicoya, and has beaches situated in the town itself, to the south and to the north:

1. Town beach: it is usually very crowded, and is where the boats that bring visitors from Jacó arrive.

2. Southern beaches: they run parallel to the road that links Montezuma with Cabuya. The route alternates sandy areas with rocky parts, and others where it is not possible to go to the coast. If you go 1.3 km you will reach Las Manchas beach, with light sand and dark rocks, although it is risky due to the currents.

3. Northern beaches: there are several kilometres of coastline that you can walk along and access from one beach to the next. The environment is totally natural, with part of the forest protected by the Nicolas Wessberg Absolute Nature Reserve and the Romelia National Wildlife Refuge. The beaches have shady trees, and each has its own characteristics and attractions:
- Montezuma Beach: is a long sandy beach that starts about 100 metres from the village. It has a campsite.
- Piedra Colorada: there is a short beach, and a stream that flows into the sea and forms small waterfalls and pools.
- Grande Beach (Big Beach): it is long, wide and sandy. It is usually solitary.
- Cocalito Beach: it has about two continuous kilometres of solitary beach. At the end there is a stream mouth, and further on there is a waterfall called El Chorro, where the water falls directly on some rocks located in the sea.

In all of them you can observe many birds, such as marine species and herons.
