Ecotourism is an important activity in this country, and it has a system of protected areas that helps to conserve its natural resources. Many national and foreign tourists come for trekking and wildlife observation activities. There are several national parks and natural reserves that are easily accessible.

Regarding the relief, in general the central part of its territory is mountainous with areas where there are volcanoes. Some of them can be visited, such as the Arenal, Irazú and Poás volcanoes. They have viewpoints and trails to see craters, scoria and typical attractions of these environments.

On the other hand, it has beaches and natural areas on both its Atlantic and Pacific coasts:
- On the Atlantic is the Tortuguero National Park, famous for being a sea turtle nesting site. You can also go to Cahuita National Park, which offers trekking and snorkeling activities. For those interested in beaches, there are several between the towns of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca and Manzanillo.
- On the Pacific coast, Manuel Antonio National Park is one of the most visited protected areas in the country. Other recommended destinations are the Marino Ballena National Park, and the Corcovado, which is an area of high biodiversity. On the other hand, in the Nicoya Peninsula there are towns with beaches such as Montezuma.

Regarding the climate, it varies greatly with the region. There are places where it rains all year round, and there are other parts where there is a dry season that generally runs from December to March.

The most common way to arrive from abroad is through the Juan Santamaria International Airport, located on the outskirts of the capital San José. From this city there are several bus terminals that take you to different destinations throughout the country.
