It is the capital and largest town in the state of Oaxaca.
There is a lot to see in the city. It has a historic centre and attractions of interest such as the Catedral Metropolitana (Metropolitan Cathedral), the Basilica de la Soledad, the Edificio de Bellas Artes, the Zócalo, the Temple of Santo Domingo de Guzmán and many more. Personally, I recommend at least half a day to explore it.
In the downtown area you will be surprised by the large number of shops, including two large markets: the Benito Juárez market and the 20 de Noviembre market. There are also ATMs, petrol stations, car rental agencies, hotels, and a variety of restaurants and eateries where you can try the typical dishes of the region.
Besides visiting the city, there are several places that can be reached by bus:
- Monte Albán Archaeological Site: not to be missed, one of the most impressive ruins in Mexico. It is very close to the city, a short taxi or bus trip away.
- Mitla Archaeological Site: about 44 km away. In addition to the ruins, there are several mezcal factories in the surrounding village.
- Hierve el Agua: about 60 km away. They are petrified waterfalls.
- Teotitlán del Valle: 24 km away. There is a 17th century church and artisans who make handmade textiles. On the outskirts of the village there is a dam with a reservoir.
