Santa Catalina

Information

It is a locality in the Argentine province of Jujuy, in the extreme north of the country and just about 2.5 km from the international border with Bolivia. It is located in the heart of the puna, at an altitude above 3700 meters above sea level. It is worth noting that it lies in a sparsely populated, arid, and isolated area, where the nearest large town is La Quiaca about 62 km away. Next to it runs the Santa Catalina River, which shares the same name as the town.

It is a destination of interest for those traveling through the Jujuy puna, as it offers basic services such as lodging and grocery stores. It preserves its traditional architecture with adobe houses and cobbled streets. Its main attraction is the Santa Catalina de Alejandría church built in the 17th century, which stands out for its 10-meter tower. In front of it is the small main square San Martín.

To get to Santa Catalina:
— By bus: there is public transportation from La Quiaca on certain days of the week.
— By car: it is 62 km from La Quiaca via a gravel road. Keep in mind that during the rainy season the road can become difficult.
