Information
The village of Yavi in the province of Jujuy, is an excellent destination for observing birds typical of the Puna environment. The variety of species that can be recorded even within the village itself is surprising, many of which are easy to observe because they are accustomed to human presence and the activity of an urban area. My recommendation for those interested in birdwatching is to set aside at least a full day, as there is a lot to see.
Along the access road from Provincial Route 5, it is common to find some citron-headed yellow-finch (Sicalis luteocephala). Black-winged ground doves (Metriopelia melanoptera) and bare-faced ground doves (Metriopelia ceciliae) can almost always be seen along the village's main street, where they can be observed with relative ease.
Walking through the streets surrounding the church and the municipal campground, it is common to find rock earthcreeper (Ochetorhynchus andaecola), Cliff Flycatcher (Hirundinea ferrugínea), creamy-breasted canastero (Asthenes dorbignyi), black-hooded sierra-finch (Phrygilus atriceps), rufous-sided warbling-finch (Poospizopsis hypocondria) and d'Orbigny's chat-tyrant (Ochthoeca oenanthoides). Among the parrots, it is very common to observe both the mountain parakeet (Psilopsiagon aurifrons) and the grey-hooded parakeet (Psilopsiagon aymara).
The rocky areas located along the Yavi River are one of the few places where the eedge-tailed hillstar (Oreotrochilus adela) can be spotted.
