Image: Laguna Colorada - Yavi
Information
It is a laguna (like a lake) situated in the middle of the Puna Jujuy, at about 8 kilometres from the locality of Yavi. The name 'Colorada' comes from the reddish colour of the soil. There are times of the year when it has a lot of water, and on the contrary, in some months it can be dry.
It is located at the foot of some hills that make up the Cordón de los Ocho Hermanos (hills), which are unmistakable due to the shape of their eight ridges arranged one after the other. On one side of the laguna there is a rocky area where petroglyphs can be seen.
To get there, from the Provincial Route 5 which joins La Quiaca with Yavi, there are two different dirt roads that lead to the laguna by different routes:
- You must drive your own vehicle or hire an excursion, as there is no public transport to the site. It is recommended to carry a GPS (with pre-loaded maps) to avoid getting lost.
- One of the roads leaves along Route 5 before the Cordón de los Ocho Hermanos (coming from Yavi), and the other leaves after passing this range of hills, which means that you will have to cross a low hill to see the laguna.
