It is a locality located in the north of the province of Jujuy, at 3442 metres above sea level.
It has services such as a tourist information office, grocery shops, an ATM, a petrol station, restaurants and lodgings. It has a municipal market where typical products and food are offered.
It is located next to the border with Bolivia. There is the border crossing La Quiaca-Villazón through the international bridge 'Horacio Guzmán'. In the centre of Quiaca there are places to change foreign currency, but crossing the border on the Bolivian side there are many exchange offices where you can usually get good rates.
In the town you can visit the main square, which has a stone church in front of it. At the intersection of Paraguay and España Avenues there is a small monument with signs indicating the end of National Route 40, which crosses the country from Cabo Vírgenes (Santa Cruz Province) in the south to this city in the north of Argentina.
Taking Provincial Route 5 there are other tourist attractions relatively close by, such as the Laguna Colorada (a swallos lake), the Cordón de los Ocho Hermanos (a mountain range) and the historic town of Yavi.
How to get to La Quiaca:
- By bus: Buses come from Salta, San Miguel de Tucumán and San Salvador de Jujuy. There are also buses from other towns in the province such as Abra Pampa, Humahuaca, Purmamarca, Tilcara and Tumbaya.
- By car from Argentina: National Route 9 ends in La Quiaca, which connects it with other towns in the province, such as Abra Pampa (72 km), Humahuaca (156 km), Tilcara (199 km), access to Purmamarca (221 km) and San Salvador de Jujuy (281 km). This same route connects to other important Argentinean cities such as Salta (371 km), San Miguel del Tucumán (672 km) and Córdoba (1230 km).
