It is a locality in the Yungas of the province of Jujuy, situated at 1484 metres above sea level. It is just outside the limits of the Calilegua National Park and within the vast Yungas Biosphere Reserve. It has a tourist information office, grocery shops, ATM (try to bring cash in case it doesn't have any), campsite, places to eat and accommodation.
In the village is the monument to the Pachamama, which has a staircase with a sculpture at the top. Nearby you can see the church of San Francisco. There are also walks to the Jordan River hot springs and to the San Francisco waterfalls, both of which must be done with a qualified guide that can be obtained in town.
How to get there:
- By bus: there is a bus that makes the route Libertador General San Martín-San Francisco-Valle Grande every day. In the morning it comes from Libertador General San Martín and in the afternoon it makes the return trip from Valle Grande (schedules must be confirmed).
- By car: San Francisco is on Provincial Route 83, a gravel road that crosses the Calilegua National Park. This road is about 45 km from Libertador General San Martín and 36.5 km from Valle Grande. Bear in mind that in rainy seasons it can be difficult to drive on this road.
