Information
The Ciudad Sagrada de los Quilmes (Sacred City of the Quilmes) is a pre-Columbian ruin located in the Valles Calchaquíes (Calchaquí Valley), about 21 km from the town of Amaicha del Valle. It is at the foot of a hill, above 1900 metres above sea level.
The archaeological area corresponds to the original people of the Quilmes, of Diaguita origin. They were there until the 18th century and were one of the most difficult to defeat during the Spanish conquest. After being defeated, they were taken on foot to the current locality of Quilmes, in the province of Buenos Aires.
Upon entering the site there is an interpretation centre with material that shows the customs of the native peoples of the place, and archaeological pieces are also exhibited. Then on the site you can see the remains of a part of what used to be a city and fortress at the same time, where the walls of circular and rectangular dwellings were partially restored. Several mortars can be seen.
To get there, if you do not have your own vehicle, there is no public transport. The best option is to go to Amaicha del Valle by bus and from there take a taxi (they are called remís) to the ruins.
