It is a national park located in the province of La Pampa, about 120 km from General Acha and 225 km from Santa Rosa. It protects its cultural and natural resources, such as its fauna and caldén forest.
It has park rangers, an interpretation centre, and a camping site with electric lights, tables, chairs, toilets and showers. There is no drinking water and the nearest town to find shops and a petrol station is Puelches, 35 km away.
An outstanding characteristic is the presence of mountain ranges in a flat territory like the one of the province of La Pampa, with the Cerro de la Sociedad Científica Argentina (a hill) at 590 metres above sea level. This mountainous environment provides a micro-environment with humidity that is useful for the development of flora and fauna.
There are also archaeological remains of original hunter/gatherer peoples that inhabited the place. Cave paintings can be observed in one sector.
There is a system of signposted trails that allow visitors to get to know the main attractions of the park. This is how this protected area is a good option for the observation of wildlife species such as birds, mammals and reptiles.
Lihué Calel is reached by the paved National Route 152, on which the entrance to the park is located. From there there is a short 2 km dirt road that leads to the picnic and camping site.
